HARRIS CENTER—Friday night, Campus Democrats put on a spectacular event in support of the Democratic candidates for this year’s presidential election, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. From a mechanical donkey to life-sized cardboard cutouts of the nominees, the Harris Center—draped in scarlet, black, and blue festoons—displayed an opulent selection of Democratic decor. The night brimmed with dance, song, games, and laughter, but the biggest surprise came when Grinnell College’s president, Anne F. Harris, stopped by for a taste of the event.

Harris waltzed beautifully at the Harris-Walz Harris Waltz in her bright blue pantsuit. Though she only stayed briefly, our B&S editors on the scene managed to get a few questions through to the campus president—not, however, before an eager first year made it to the scene and, confusing Anne with Kamala, called her Momala.

When asked about her thoughts on the upcoming election and democratic candidates, Harris waltzed around our questions, refusing to comment on Harris or Walz. Citing the “Hatch Act,” Harris explained that she is not allowed to comment on partisan issues while on duty. When our highly-trained B&S fact checkers further investigated the Hatch Act of 1939, we learned that it applies specifically to federal employees on the job. When we questioned Harris about her standing as a federal employee (which typically does not apply to presidents of private institutions like Grinnell College), she simply answered, “no comment,” and waltzed away.

Although her political alignment remains unconfirmed, many have interpreted Harris’s appearance at the waltz as evidence that she supports the Democratic Party. Others, gesturing broadly to every public-facing material released by the College in recent years, argue that this was already pretty obvious. However, more information is yet to be gathered, and the B&S waits eagerly to see if the president will make an appearance at the decidedly uninspiring Trump-Vance Gardner Dance next weekend.
